Beaded Porcelain Vase

We were first drawn Cara Taylor’s work because of her modern, clean style.  We love her focus on the shape of the object rather than any color or embellishment.  In 2001, Cara graduated from the University of Delaware with a BFA in ceramics.  Seven years later, she stepped out on her own with Taylor Ceramicsin Northampton, MA.   There is a fluidity to her pieces that is also apparent in her process:  She uses slip casting, wheel throwing and hand building depending on how she is engaging with the clay from day to day.   When we met with her, she showed us some of her new pieces, which will incorporate stitching along the sides of an object.  We can’t wait to see where she goes!

In the mean time, we are thrilled with the vase Cara has made for Little Yellow Couch.  She was excited to try a new design for us and, after a few trials with some prototypes in the kiln, presented us with this gorgeous vessel.   We wanted something that could accommodate a small bouquet as well as one or two big stems.  This vase looks absolutely gorgeous, even when it’s standing alone without flowers.  She uses her signature celadon glaze on this piece, which gives it the most subtle hint of blue-green that you only notice at certain times of the day.  The simple row of dark teal beads down one side is emphasized by the very thin edge on that side of the vase.  As it opens up into a teardrop shape, you can see how there is movement in the lines, reminiscent of flowers being held loosely in a piece of cloth.  It’s modern, chic, calm and stunning, all at once!
